College Shack officially launched on November 17, 2008 and is a division of the Foxcore Corporation. After Facebook opened their social site to the general public, many college students called foul and were extremely upset, including Topher. One day, he got on Facebook to see that his little brother, who was only in middle school tried to add him as a friend. Outraged, Topher decided it was time another networking social site to fill the gap of where all the others left off.
College Shack began just as an idea, known originally as project B52 internally and later, as College Interact. The name College Shack didn't come about for about a year after the idea was first formed. The name was finally chosen after a small polling of close friends of Topher. However, the name was the least of our problems as the first version of the site (never publically released) was plagued with problems from the start. Based both on Perl and PHP, parts of the site would fight with other parts of the site, and integration was anything but seamless each time a new module was ready. Finally after a year of trying to fix the poor coding, Topher abandoned the original coding. College Shacks future was very bleak as it did not seem feasible without multiple developers.
Topher was determined to make the site work, without multiple developers, and instead of going full throttle into programming the site without a master plan, he carefully laid out the plans for the site. With security and speed in mind, all the original coding was trashed and the new version of the site began. With diagrams in hand, a careful strategy began to unfold. The new site would be built like a building, the most important parts being the foundation and building up from there. Fast forward a little more than a year and the foundation was complete. All new modules would easily and securely integrate with each other as they now had a common interface to communicate with. PHP was chosen to run the site instead of mixing both Perl and PHP which caused many of the problems plaguing the first version.
Today, College Shack continues to evolve and involve those within the College Shack community. We are striving to create the best online networking social site for college students for whom all features are made for. With more users joining everyday and new features being rolled out regularly College Shack is quickly growing to be the largest social site exclusively for college students.
The site is developed as a joint venture between Foxcore Corporation, Topher, Jim and the community at large.
